Basit's journey with Social Mining isn't just a story – it's a masterclass in unlocking hidden potential. Originally a data analyst from Lagos, Nigeria, pursuing his Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Basit discovered that his true growth wasn't in numbers, but in the thrilling world of creativity through Social Mining!
He bravely admits, “Social Mining gave me the platform to explore new skills I never thought I had, like design, content creation, and engaging with online communities. That’s a huge part of who I am today!”
Basit initially battled that all-too-common fear: “I thought I had to be perfect or an expert before anyone would take me seriously.” But then, a fellow miner and friend, @AdebolaAyan, dropped a truth bomb that changed everything: “‘Bro, nobody started as an expert. You grow by doing.’ That stuck with me.”
Fueled by that powerful encouragement, Basit took the leap! He started contributing to Social Mining with raw enthusiasm – simple posts, early designs, and buzzing Twitter threads. It felt a little awkward at first, but his secret weapon? Consistency! And trust us, that became his ultimate superpower.
When Purpose Replaced Pressure
The real shift happened in November 2024, when Basit decided it was time to stop relying on others and take control of his financial future. That internal decision sparked a new sense of purpose and Social Mining became more than just a side activity.
“When I finally reached out again, he didn’t hold that against me. He patiently walked me through everything, setting up wallets, creating accounts on different hubs, and showing me how to navigate it all.”
With help from Adebola and support from the community, he got up to speed quickly. He was guided through everything. Before long, his efforts began to be recognized, including a key moment when he was selected in a campaign that boosted his confidence.
Growth in Every Sense
What started as a personal challenge has become a full transformation.
“I used to be quite shy, especially in group spaces. I wouldn’t say much. But being part of a supportive community changed that.,” Basit reflects.
Even though he had no design or content background, he began learning by doing. And thanks to encouragement from fellow miners and community leads, like @beautyqueenamara, @azra1eL, @Akinde5, and @Arolee_banks, Basit found a safe, supportive space to keep growing.

Advice to the Next Newbie
If someone told him they had “zero experience,” Basit would tell them this:
“You don’t need to have it all figured out, just start.’ I came in with zero experience too. I wasn’t a designer, I wasn’t a content creator. I was just someone who wanted to grow, learn, and stop depending fully on others financially.
Ask questions. Start with small tasks. Be consistent, even if your first post or design feels awkward”
He knows this because he’s lived it. His journey is a reminder that everyone starts somewhere and sometimes, “no experience” is exactly the right place to begin.
